Thus, the conflict was born anew, with the forces of the two sides now locked in a war in undeath. In a way, this ensured the Ikana Royal Family would be revived and that the Ikana Kingdom would not fall at the cost of an eternal conflict between the restless spirits of the Ikana and the Garo. This deal was, like all deals with Majora, a trick that instead cursed the land with undeath. Sharp, observing his land invaded by the Garo, made a deal with one of Majora's wearers for " the revival of the Royal Family" of Ikana. As the Garo spirits were so well spread-out by the time of Link's arrival it can be presumed that they were successful in their invasion. Considering what Majora may have been in the past, this shouldn't be shocking.įlat, Sharp's composer brother, suggests that Sharp made a deal with the devil in response to the land of the Ikana being taken over. Regardless, it does appear that Majora was indeed responsible. It is somewhat unlikely if the Skull Kid was the one who cursed the land as the timeline of the curse seems long ago and Skull Kid had only recently taken the mask. One of the Ikana Kingdom's royal composers, Sharp, remarks that a " masked one" is responsible for the dead lingering in the land, suggesting that Majora's Mask was responsible for the land's curse though the identity of this wearer is unknown. Related: Why Zelda Doesn't Have A Doppelganger In Majora's Mask By healing the tortured brothers' spirits, Link will learn the story of how the curse came to be and its origin, the Stone Tower Temple. The brothers hold a position of immense importance within the Ikana Kingdom, whose culture appears to heavily incorporate dance and music (traits that extend to them in undeath as well). Coincidentally, the composer brothers are one of the few returning Ocarina of Time characters in Majora's Mask. To identify the origins of the curse, players have to take a detour to find the spirits of the Ikana Royal Family's royal composers, Flat and Sharp. Desperate for salvation, it was at this point that one member of the Ikana Kingdom may have made a Faustian deal that sealed the fate of the entire Ikana Canyon. As Link encounters a higher than normal amount of Garo within the grounds of the old Ikana Castle, it may be presumed that the Garo were winning the war. Pushed to the brink, the Ikana Royal Family was forced to retreat into their castle, where Link may encounter the undead form of the Igos du Ikana himself. Their ruthless tactics were able to overwhelm the Ikana king, Igos du Ikana, and the king suffered a grievous loss of his territory as a result. While it is unknown what originally sparked the war between the Ikana and the Garo, one thing still lingers by the time of Link's arrival in Majora's Mask: their rivalry. Their highly secretive nature lends well to their ability as spies, having been able to infiltrate the Ikana Kingdom up to the Stone Tower dungeon, where the Ikana are unable to venture. As stated earlier, the Garo spirits the player encounters were originally spies sent to gather intelligence on the Ikana Kingdom and their defenses. The origins of why the Garo still plague the Ikana Canyon lie in their war with the Ikana. Here is everything about the Garo, their war with the Ikana, and how they too became cursed. Luckily the lore of Majora's Mask isn't quite as dense as the lore for Elden Ring, so diligent players may have an easier time constructing the mystery. To determine what happened to the Garo, the player must piece together the mystery of why the Ikana Kingdom is haunted, and what caused it. However, not much else is given to the player, leaving much of their lore up to analysis. After a defeat, the Garo will always commit ritual suicide, either by flame or by a bomb, following their laws. Befitting their roles as spies, the Gero spirits are very knowledgable about the land of the Ikana and divulge what they know when bested in combat by Link. The spirits of the Garo manifest in places where a " thirst for blood is looming all around." They may only be visualized when Link is wearing the Garo's Mask, sadly one of the least useful masks in Majora's Mask. However, by the time Link arrives, the only inhabitants are the undead and spirits, with the Garo being no exception. The Garo seen in Majora's Mask were originally spies sent to observe the Ikana Kingdom.
